Aval - 2 Cups
Salt - To taste
Tamarind - 1 gooseberry size

For Seasoning:
Oil - 1 teaspoon
Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
Urdhal - 1 teaspoon
Hing - a pinch
Red Chillies - 2


  • soak the tamarind and extrac the juice
  • Rinse the aval in water and add salt and tamarind extract and keep it aside
  • In the pan pour the oil and add the mustard seeds. When the mustard seeds begins to sputter add the urdhal,hing and broken red chillies and fry it till the dhals becomes red color.
  • Now add the aval and stir it evenly
  • The delicious puli aval Uppuma is ready to serve
