Vazhaikai Vathakal(Raw Banana vathakal) / Vazhakai poriyal

Potato, raw banana, tara root are some perfect veggies for any dishes especially for South Indian Rice varieties and even for simple Rasam and Kuzhamb dishes. Even for the Pulao varieties, this Plantain Fry(Vazhakkai Vathakal) would be a perfect accompaniment. Most of us do this same method and make Plaintain Poriyal, but it would be helpful for the beginners who are learning to cook.

Ingredients:
Plantain (Raw Banana)3
Turmeric Powder1/2 teaspoon
Red Chilli Powder1 Teaspoon
Coriander Power1 Teaspoon
SaltTo Taste

For Seasoning:
Oil1 tablespoon
Mustard Seeds1 Teaspoon
Asafoetidaa Pinch
Curry LeavesFew

Method:
  1. Peel the Plantain and slice  it (Vazhaikaai) and soak it in water and keep it aside. Soaking in water prevents de-colorization. 
  2. Heat the oil in the pan, add mustard seeds and when the mustard seeds begins to sputter add asafoetida and curry leaves and fry for few seconds
  3. Add the sliced raw banana in the pan and mix well
  4. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder and coriander powder and toss them well. Keep in medium flame and allow the plantain to cook till it is soft and tender. Allow it to cook completely. Sprinkle water if necessary.
  5. Once the raw banana is cooked, add salt and toss once. Keep the flame in very low till the edges of the raw banana are crispy and they turn light golden brown. Switch off the flame
  6. The delicious raw banana vathakal / Vazhakai vathakal is ready to serve
