Raw banana is a common vegitable in south india, especially in the brahmin familes. One such common recipe - Vazhakkai vathakal(raw banana vathakkal/poriyal) is given below

Raw Banana(Vazhaikaai) - 2
Red Chilli powder - 1 teaspoon
Salt - To Taste

For Seasoning:
Oil - 1 teaspoon
Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
Urdhal - 1 teaspoon


  1. Chop finely the raw banana(Vazhaikaai) and soak it in water and keep it aside
  2. Heat the oil in the pan, add mustard seeds and when the mustard seeds begins to sputter add urdhal and fry till it becomes golden brown color
  3. Add the chopped raw banana in the pan and add red chilli powder and salt and mix it well
  4. Allow it to cook completely. Sprinkle water if necessary.
  5. Once the raw banana(vazhaikaai) is cooked completely, remove it from flame
The delicious raw banana vathakal / Vazhakai vathakal is ready to serve
