Tanjore Special yummy Accompaniment for Idli / dosa
Kumbakonam Kadappa / Kadapa is a special stew made with moong dal, potatoes and whole spices. Kadappa otherwise called as Kumbakonam Kadappa is a very scrumptious side dish for Idli or Dosa. This is one of the popular dishes in Tanjore district.Most of us conventionally make Sambar and chutney varieties for idli / dosa. Every restaurant in kumbakonam and other areas of Tanjore district serves this yummy dish for the breakfast. Very simple to make and a best combination for Idli and Dosa.
Unlike Sambar Kumbakonam Kadappa / Kadapa have strong masala flavor as we are using key masala ingredients like Fennel Seeds, Bay Leaves, Cinnamon. This goes very well hot Idli and Dosa and even with Poori/Chapati. Onions and Potatoes cooked with fennel and garlic flavoured coconut gravy is a perfect accompaniment for hot Idli.

Kumbakonam Kadappa / Kadapa
Ingredients
- ¼ cup Moong Dal
- 2 Potato
- ¼ tsp Turmeric Powder
- 1 Onion
- 2 Green Chilli
- 1 tsp Lemon Juice
- 1 tbsp Coriander Leaves
For Grinding
- ¼ cup Grated Coconut
- 2 Garlic
- 1 tsp Fennel Seeds
- 2 tsp Poppy Seeds
For Tempering
- 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
- 1 inch Cinnamon (Pattai)
- 1 Bay Leaf
- 2 tsp Oil
Instructions
Pressure cook the Dal & Potatoes
- Wash the moong dal, add water and pinch of turmeric. Also add the Potatoes in the pressure . Pressure cook the potatoes along with the dal and allow for 3-4 whistles. Mash the the cooked dal and the potatoes and keep it ready
Start with the Tempering
- Soak the poppy seeds in hot water for 10 minutes. Finely slice the onions and chop the green chilies. Heat oil in a pan and add bay leaf and cinnamon stick and also add mustard seeds
Fry the Onions
- When the mustard seeds starts to sputter, add green chilies, curry leaves and fry for 10 seconds. Then add the sliced onions along with a pinch of salt and saute them till the onions turn transparent
Add the Masalas
- Meanwhile, take the grated coconut, fennel seeds, soaked poppy seeds along with garlic cloves in mixer and grind it to a nice paste
Add Potato & Dal
- When the onions are transparent, then add 2 cups of water and add necessary salt for the dish. Then add mashed dal with mashed potatoes and mix well and allow the mixture to boil for 5 minutes in medium flame
Add the ground paste
- Finally add the ground paste to the boiling kadapa mixture and again keep the flame in low for 5 more minutes and then remove from flame. Finally add lemon juice and chopped coriander leaves and mix well
Serving Time
- The yummy Kumbakonam Kadappa is ready to serve with Idli / Dosa

I used to go to a hotel nearby Kumbeswarankoil for this only. I do not remember the name of the hotel now. Infact we used to order two idlies and drink Kadappa. It was all fun during that time.
