Avarakkai Poriyal is a easy broad beans stir-fy made with freshly grated coconut. It's a great accompaniment for Sambar or Rasam rice. Usually this can be made within 15 minutes (if we chop them and keep it ready for cooking).
Avarakkai (Broad Beans) is a healthy vegetable rich in dietary fiber. We can do many yummy recipes using broad beans. Broad beans are easily available most of the year. Fresh broad beans gets cooked quickly and makes our job easier. Tender beans has edible seeds inside which when cooked will be so delicious when we take a bite. Here is the simple poriyal recipe which goes well with any sambar or kuzhambu or rasam variety. In particular, avarakkai poriyal (Broad Beans Poriyal) is a very good accompaniment for Bittergourd Pitlai.
Variation we can make to this poriyal:
- Instead of garnishing with freshly grated coconut, we can grind the coconut, red chili, jeera without adding water and add that dry paste to the cooked board beans.
- We can also try grinding roasted gram(pottukadalai) with red chili, cumin and add it to cooked broad beans.
- We can also make Paruppu Usili with broad beans that would be a perfect accompaniment for Mor Kuzhambu/ Vathakuzhambu.

Ingredients
- 250 grams Broad Beans (Avarakkai)
- 1 pinch Turmeric Powder
- ¾ tsp Salt
- 1 tbsp Grated Coconut
For Tempering
- 1 tsp Oil
- 1 tsp Mustard seeds
- 1 tsp Split Urad Dal
- 1 nos Red Chili
Instructions
- Wash and finely chop the broadbeans.
- Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds when the oil is hot. When the mustard seeds starts to sputter, add split urid dal and broken red chilli and fry them till the dal turns golden brown color
- Now add chopped broad beans to the pan and add turmeric powder and salt and stir-fry them for couple of minutes.
- Then sprinkle some water and cover the pan with lid and allow the broad beans to cook completely
- Stir occasionally and check if the beans needs more water to cook. If so sprinkle some more water and cook till the broad beans are soft and tender. Finally add grated coconut and mix well and keep in flame for a minute and then remove from flame
- Serve this yummy and simple Avarakkai Poriyal with any rice varieties.

Method to make Avarakkai Poriyal with step by step pictures :
