Red Coconut chutney is a lip smacking chutney made using fresh coconut, red chilli and other spices, an easy to prepare chutney is a best accompaniment for Idli, Dosa and other breakfast dishes. We made slight variation in the conventional red coconut chutney to get the hotel / restaurant style
Red Coconut Chutney, is a very popular chutney variety in most of the southern parts of Tamil Nadu. A spicy version of Coconut chutney with a rich flavor of garlic and onions. A perfect accompaniment for Idli, dosa and many breakfast dishes. Adding 1 garlic clove itself gives a good aroma. This is one of the chutney very famous in Murugan Idli Shop in Tamilnadu.
Some other variations in making Red Coconut Chutney
- Kerala style – Skip the garlic. Instead, you can add 1″ ginger in the mixer.
- To get a colorful chutney, please use Kashmiri Red Chili instead of conventional red chili
- Adding Tomato is optional.

Ingredients
- ½ cup Grated Coconut 1 cup = 250 ml
- 2 tbsp Roasted Gram Dal (Pottukadalai / Dhaliya)
- 5 nos Red Chili
- 1 small gooseberry size Tamarind 1
- 1 cloves Garlic
- 4 nos Shallots / Baby Onions
- 1 tsp Salt
For Tempering
- 1 tbsp Coconut Oil
- 1 tsp Mustard seeds
- 2 nos Red Chili broken
- 1 tsp Split Urad Dal
- Curry Leaves few
- 1 pinch Hing
Instructions
- Take all the grinding ingredients to the mixer jar. Grind everything to a nice paste by adding little water
- In a pan, heat oil. Add mustard seeds and allow it to sputter. When the mustard seeds starts to sputter, add split urid dal, red chili, hing and curry leaves and fry till the dal become golden brown color
- Add the seasoned ingredients to the chutney
- The delicious and spicy Red Coconut Chutney is ready! Serve with Idli or dosa and enjoy the dish!
