Want to make a perfect side dish for Idli / Dosa / Ven Pongal in a quick and easy way? Try this Onion Gotsu. Goes well with many South Indian Breakfast dishes, especially with Ven Pongal. I have already published my version of Brinjal Gotsu. My friend's Sister shared with me how to make this Onion Gotsu, it was  so simple but so so tasty especially when served with Ven Pongal. For brinjal gotsu we need to use dal and it takes little more time than this onion gotsu. On the other hand, this Onion Gotsu is very quick to make.By the time the pongal is getting ready, this gotsu will be ready in no time.

Ingredients:
Tamarind1 Lemon Size
Baby Onion / Shallots1 Cup, Sliced
Tomato1, Sliced
SaltTo taste
Turmeric Powder1/4 teaspoon
Grated Jaggery 1 Tablespoon


For Seasoning:
Gingelly Oil1 Tablespoon
Mustard Seeds1 Teaspoon
Bengal Gram Dal1 Teaspoon
Red Chilli6-7, Broken 
Curry LeavesFew

Method:
  1. Soak tamarind in warm water for 10 minutes and extract the juice
  2. Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and allow it to sputter. Add bengal gram dal and sauté till the dal becomes light golden color
  3. Then add broken red chili, curry leaves and saute for few seconds
  4. Now, add the chopped onions along with turmeric powder and pinch of salt and sauté onions till transparent
  5. Then, add tomato pieces and sauté the tomatoes for 2 minutes
  6. Add the tamarind extract along with salt and allow the tamarind extract to boil till the raw smell goes off
  7. Once the tamarind extract has boiled nicely, add water to adjust the sourness and consistency. Also add grated jaggery and allow the gotsu to boil for 5 minutes and then switch off the flame
  8. The yummy and tasty Onion Gotsu Ready to be served. Best combination for Venpongal!
