Arisi Paruppu Sadam Recipe | Kongunadu Style Arisi Paruppu Sadam

Arisi Paruppu Sadam is one of the most popular rice variety in parts of Kongunadu. Kongunadu comprises, present day Coimbatore, Salem, Erode, Thirupur and some more cities. Conventionally parboiled rice or ponni raw rice is used for making this rice. Very easy to make rice variety. It is a one-pot rice variety, we can prepare and cook the rice and dal directly in pressure cooker making our life so easy. For kids lunchbox this would be a perfect dish! I love to relish this rice with Potato Kara Curry or Brinjal Podi Curry. You can serve with any roasted veggies or simply with toasted papad (sutta appalam).
There is one version of Rice-dal Pulao in NorthIndia popularly referred as “Dal Masala Rice“. Dal Masala rice is also made with rice and toor dal but instead of our conventional South Indian spices like sambar powder, this North Indian version uses whole masala’s like cinnamon, clove ,cardamom for tempering and the spices like green chili and garam masala. You can also try that way if you are looking for some variation to the conventional Arisi Paruppu Sadam.
Tips for making Arisi Paruppu Sadam:
- Soak the rice and dal for 30 mins. It will help the rice and dal to get cooked together quickly in 3 whistles and also with less water.
- For 1 cup of rice and 1/4 cup of dal, use 3 cups of water. That will make the rice fluffy without getting mushy.
- Cook for only 3 whistles. If we overcook, the rice becomes more mushy.
- Allow the cooked rice to cool off before you give a mix.
