Inji Thayir is one of the important and simplest dish served for Onam Sadaya. This is essentially Yogurt with grated ginger, chopped green chili and curry leaves. It's a good accompaniment to the curd rice (as a pickle). Ginger plays an important role in bringing balance to the food.  With heavy Sadya menu, this helps in easy digestion after heavy meals. This doesn't require any cooking and can be made in just 5 minutes.

Variation in making Inji Thayir by adding Coconut paste

Inji Thayir can be made easily by just mixing the spices with Yogurt. But to enrich the taste, we can also add the coconut paste.  Please follow the below steps if you would like to make this with coconut.

  • Take ¼ cup of grated coconut. Add the ginger and green chili. Grind them to a smooth paste by adding 2-3 tablespoon of water
  • Add this paste to the Yogurt and mix well.
  • In a pan add a teaspoon of oil. Once the oil is hot add one teaspoon of oil. Add 1 teaspoon of Mustard Seeds and allow it to sputter. Now add curry leaves and switch off the flame. Add this tempering to the yogurt and coconut mixture.

Inji Thayir is a yogurt spiced with Ginger & Green Chili. It's an essential part of Onam Sadya. Ginger has many medicinal value and help to balance the diet and in digestion. With heavy Onam Sadya treat, Inji Thayir helps stimulating appetite and helps in easy digestion. It's the most simple recipe in the Onam Sadya menu.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoon Ginger peeled and grated
  • 2 nos Green Chili finely chopped (adjust to your taste)
  • ¾ cup Curd (Plain Yogurt)
  • 4-5 nos Curry leaves finely chopped
  • ½ teaspoon Salt (adjust to your taste)

Instructions 

Preparation

  • Wash and peel the ginger. Grate them finely. Keep this aside
  • Finely chop the Green Chilies and keep it aside.
  • Take the Yogurt in a bow and whisk it well.

Mixing them together to make Inji Thayir

  • Add grated ginger, chopped green chili, chopped curry leaves with the yogurt. Also add Salt and mix well
  • Serve the Inji Thayir and Enjoy !

Notes

Method to make Inji Thayir with step by step pictures

  • Wash and peel the ginger. Grate them finely. Keep this aside
