Jeera Aloo is a North Indian staple food which is often served as a side dish and normally goes well with hot puris, chapatti, roti or dal. Its main ingredients are potatoes, cumin seeds and Indian spices. This is a no onion no garlic version of Jeera Aloo and its pretty quick and easy. We can also make this Jeera aloo with onion, garlic and tomato. Since this is a no onion no garlic, we can make this delicious dry curry during fasting days like Ekadashi, Navratri fasting or other festival days. Even we stuff the jeera aloo as a filling kathi roll like we make paneer filling.

Jeera aloo can be made very mild or we can enrich with more spices to make it more interesting. This version of Jeera aloo is not very mild or spicy. Even for Pulao, Biryani or even for South Indian rice varieties this curry would be a perfect accompaniment.

Tips for Jeera Aloo:

  1. We need to cook potato till its just done. Do not cook till its mushy. The potatoes should be cooked but more firmer.
  2. We can boil the potatoes in open pan or we can pressure cook the potatoes for 2-3 whistles.
  3. Allow the cooked potatoes to cool off completely before you cut into cubes.
  4. Instead of red chili powder, we can just spice up only with green chili so the potatoes looks even more appealing and appetizing.
  5. Generally I don’t add hing if I add ginger or onion as they overpower the hing. But if you like, you can add hing.
  6. Amchoor powder gives a nice tangy flavor to the jeera aloo curry. If you don’t have you can skip.

  • Aloo Palak : Aloo Palak, a scrumptious dry curry made with spinach and potato. The nutrition of the spinach will get nicely incorporated with masala and potato making this dry curry more healthy.
  • Bitter Gourd Masala : Bitter Gourd Masala Stir Fry, a delicious dry Subzi made with bitter gourd, potato and spices. This dry curry would be a perfect accompaniment for any South Indian Main Courses or Roti/Pulao etc.,
  • Achar Kela : Achar Kela, a wonderful dry curry made with Raw Banana flavored with freshly prepared Achar Masala. Spices are well balanced making this dry curry a perfect accompaniment for South Indian or North Indian Main Courses.
