Jeera rice, a popular and easy to make rice variety with rich flavor of Jeera (Cumin Seeds). Fluffy Basmati rice is cooked along with ghee based cumin tempering. Jeera Rice, an awesome rice variety just with rice and cumin seeds. It’s a popular and easy to make rice variety with rich flavor of Jeera (Cumin Seeds). Fluffy Basmati rice is cooked along with ghee based cumin tempering. Relish this Jeera rice with any dal varieties like Dal Makhani, Gujarati dal, Rajma Masala etc. Jeera rice with dal fry is one the most popular combo. This is one easy rice which never fails. We can make this jeera rice directly on a pan or use a pressure cooker or an Instant Pot. Jeera Rice with dal is a wholesome meal! 

Tips for making Jeera Rice:

  • Always rinse the rice atleast 2 to 3 times to get rid of the starch in the rice and water becomes clear
  • We can cook the rice in a pressure cooker, rice cooker, microwave or directly in a pan covered with lid
  • Different kinds of rice needs different amount of water. The age of rice, brands determine the amount of water. If the rice is old, it needs more water as the new rice always has more moisture. If we need to cook more quantity of rice, then the ratio of rice : water (1:2) should be reduced
  • To get fluffy and puffy rice, we can add 1 teaspoon of oil to the boiling water or we can roast the rice a little and then we can cook

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Basmati Rice 1 Cup - 250ml
  • 1 Onion Thinly sliced. (Optional)
  • 10 Mint Leaves Optional
  • 2 tbsp Coriander Leaves
  • 1 tsp Salt Adjust as needed
  • 2 Cups Water
  • 2 tbsp Oil

Tempering

  • 3 tbsp Ghee
  • 1 Bay Leaf
  • 1 inch Cinnamon Stick
  • 3-4 Cloves
  • 2 Cardamom
  • 1 Star Anise
  • 3 Green Chili Slit
  • 1 tbsp Cumin Seeds

Instructions

Soaking Rice

  • Wash the basmati rice atleast twice and add fresh water. Soak the basmati rice for 20 mins.

Tempering

  • Heat ghee in a pan. Add the whole garam masalas (Cinnamom, bay leaf, cloves, star anise, cardamom). Cook masala for 30 secs.
  • To the pan, add the cumin seeds and allow it to sputter.
  • Then, add the slit green chili and give a mix.

Cooking Rice

  • Now, add 2 cups of water to the pan.
  • Next, add mint and coriander leaves to the water. Also add salt to the water.
  • Bring the water to boil. Then drain water from soaked rice and add it to the boiling water.
  • Give a good stir. Allow the rice to cook in water till most of the water is absorbed.
  • Now, close the pan with a lid and keep the flame very low. Allow the rice to get cooked for 15 mins in low flame.

Frying Onions

  • While the rice is getting cooked in low flame, lets fry the onions. Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a pan. Add onions to the pan.
  • Fry onions till its deep brown color.

Finish Jeera Rice

  • Once the rice is fully cooked, add the fried onions and switch off the flame.

Serving

  • Relish the delicious Jeera Rice with dal fry or any dal variety of your choice!

Tried. It was very nice in taste n good combo with taDka wali daal. I fried kaju with onion lastly kismis. This added to the taste. But as I cooked the rice in a pressure cooker consistency was poor, though it looked somewhat like pongal it tasted gr8. Thank u Subbu maami!

The ingredients list has cinnamon, cardamom, star anise, bay leaf…but looks like they are not required?
