Karadayan Nonbu | Significance, Pooja Procedure & Recipes
Karadayan Nonbu or Savitri Vratham is a traditional tamilnadu festival of fasting wherein married women will pray for the wellness and long life of their husbands. This nonbu should be done exactly in the time when tamil month ‘Masi’ ends and the next month ‘Panguni’ starts. The reason why this fasting is carried out is that “Savithri fought with yema to save her husband’s life”, the sameway the married women should fast on this auspicious day for long life of their husbands.
Karadayan Nonbu – Story Behind
Savitri – Satyavan Story is the main reason we celebrate Karadayan Nonbu. Savitri is a legendry women who first started observing this fast. Lets see the story behind.
Long ago, there lived a king called Astapathi. He had a daughter named Savitri. The king had told his daughter that she had the freedom to choose her husband. One day Savithri was walking in a forest and she saw a young man carrying a pole with 2 baskets. Inside the baskets his parents were seated. Both his parents were blind and hence the young man (Satyavan) was serving them by carrying them. Seeing this devoted man, Savitri decided to marry him and told her father about her wish.
King Astapathi wanted to fulfill the wishes of his daughter and therefore enquired Sage Narad about the boy. Narad said that Satyavan was a prince and son of the kingly couple he was carrying. This family was driven out by the enemies after their kingdom was captured. However, Narad also cautioned that this boy would live not more than a year as per his horoscope. However, Savitri was persistent in her demand that she would marry only Satyavan. King Ashtapati had to yield to her request with no other way and the marriage happened.
After marriage, for an year, Savitri and Satyavan lived happily. But, Savitri was aware that the death of Satyavan was approaching soon. She was observing strict vrats and was engaged in ardent prayers. On the day when the month of Masi would merge in to Panguni, Lord Yama arrived to take away the life of Satyavan who fell dead. Savitri persistently made efforts to follow Lord Yama who is taking away the soul of Satyavan. Seeing her vrat and her persistent efforts, Lord Yama was pleased. He decided to grant her with 3 boons.
Boons asked by Savitri
Savitri was so intelligent and she decided to use her opportunity. She asked 3 boons
- To get back the prosperity to the family of Satyavan
- Bless her father with a son and ;
- Bless her virtuous sons to through Satyavan.
To fulfill the third boon, Yama had to leave Satyavan back to live with her. In this way, Savitri won the life of her husband with her diligence, chastity prayers and cleverness.
So this festival is also known as Savitri vratam in Tamil / Savitri Vrat in Hindi. On this day, Women observe fasting and pray for the wellness and long life of their husbands. This nonbu/vrat should be done exactly in the time when Tamil month ‘Masi’ ends and the next month ‘Panguni’ starts. Fast is observed from the sunrise on the supposed transition day and ends with the Puja.Women break the fast by eating the Karadai (Made of Rice & dal) preparation with unmelted butter by chanting a slokha.
In short, the reason why this fasting is carried out is that “ Savithri fought with yama (the God of Death) to save her husband’s (Satyavan) life”, the same way the married women should fast on this auspicious day for long life of their husbands. Unmarried woman also observe Karadaiyan Nombu and pray to Goddess to get good men as their husband.Prayers are offered to Gowri Devi and women meditate on Savitiri and wear a yellow thread round their neck.
When to perform Nonbu in 2023 ?
This year (2022) the date for karadayan nonbu is 15th March. From the morning ladies need do be in fasting till the time for nonbu saradu. As per Panchangam, the muhurtam (auspicious time) for tying Nonbu Saradu is between 6:00AM to 06.45 AM IST (as per Vakkiya Panjankam).
How to Perform Karadayan Nonbu Pooja ?
The neivehdyam for this fasting is Karadayan Nonbu Adai with butter along with vetrilai, pakku, pazham and cocunut. We should get yellow ropes that has to be tied by all the women in a house. In each of the rope small flower is tied up and one rope should be put in the Kamakshi amman picture and the rest should be tied up by all women in the house.
“Urugadha Vennayam oru adayum vaithu nonbu notren oru nallum en kanavar piriyamal iruka vendum“
This should be chanted while tying up the rope in the neck. Even the young girls of more than one year old should tie up these ropes to get the blessings of God.
Neyvedhyam (Offering to God) prepared for Karadayan Nonbu
Vella Adai & Uppadai(Salt Adai) will be prepared for the Karadayan Nonbu for the Neyvedhyam

Thank you maami, for help with the time as well as the recipe.

How many times must the chant be chanted?
Hi Maven,
You can chant once.
Dear Maami,
My thali hole (called as siru thali) is very small which is very difficult to insert the rope inside of thali every year. Can i increase the size of old thali? how to do? how much weight(in gms) of thali i can wear?
what procedure i have to do for that?
Help me.
Hello Mami,
Can you please tell me if we can have lunch (rice which is our usual lunch) after tying the yellow thread for nonbu?? Do we need to stick to nonbu adai as palahaaram for the nyt or any tiffin varieties (without onion) would do?
Hi Shubra
The only hindu Viratham for which we should not take curd/butter milk is Karadayan Nonbu. Generally in orthodex family, the married women will fast till the viratham time and after tying the holy thread, they will eat nonbu adai and fast the rest of the day and eat milk and any fruit(preferably banana) in the night. But now a days most of us are working women and also elderly women are not able to fast the whole day, so we can have a light tiffen for the dinner.
hi mami so happy that u posted the dated and time. I used to wait to know the time till i make a call to my mom now i got to know in advance from ur site thank u keep posting such info in future too
Hi Mami,
I am not in India and my time zone is different.Should I also fast? I am 5.5 hours ahead of India.
Thanks,
Ramya
Hi Ramya
Whereever we are, it is good to fast on this auspicious day. You tie the holy yello rope as per your time zone.
Hi Mammi, what should be the typical lunch menu on the nombu day
Normally married women should fast the whole day and should eat only nonbu adai. For others in home, we can cook moorkuzhambu or Sambar with Thakali rasam and avial and one green vegetable for poriyal along with paruppu vadai and thayir pachidi.
thanks a lot and it helped me a lot mam
Hello Mammi, followed your recipe and made these vadais, they were very delicious, thanks for the perfect recipe.

Hi Milee, Thanks. I have corrected it.
Hi Mami,
I am in Melbourne,Australia. Can you please tell me at what time I should perform the Nombu?
Thanks,
Ramya
Hi Ramya, i checked with my friends in Sydney and they told it is around 9.27 pm in the night.
Hi Mami,
I want to know the viratham procedure ,how to do and wat time. For me this s first time ,i dono briefly abt this can u explain me,should i take food or not?
how long i hav to tie the rope?
Hi, We need to be in fasting till we tie the rope. Meanwhile, we need to prepare the neivedhyam vella and uppu adai and keep it ready. Between 3.30 and 3.40 PM IST, we can perform the neivedhyam and chant the verses which i have mentioned above in my post and tie the holy rope and end the fast by having the vella adai and uppu adai. For the dinner, again we can have these adai along with milk and banana and go for sleep.
This is the tradition for the viratham. The verses in tamil to be chanted
Urugadha Vennayam oru adayum vaithu nonbu notren oru nallum en kanavar piriyamal iruka vendum
This means we are praying God about the wellness of our Husband and he should stay for ever with us.
As per the tradition which was followed in olden days, the rope has to be tied till the next year karadayan nonbu. Till then, during bath, we need to apply turmeric powder to the rope. But now a days, it is not being followed. So you can remove after 2 days and make sure it should not be Tuesday or Friday.

i want to know the viratham details can u explain me,,,,,how to do and wat time s correct to do,,,,,pls help me
This year karadayan nonbu is on 14th march between 3.30 and 3.40 PM IST. But the time varies for each state and country. I am familiar with TamilNadu timings. We need to be in fasting till we tie the rope. Meanwhile, we need to prepare the neivedhyam vella and uppu adai and keep it ready. We need to tie the rope even for kanya girls(unmarried/young) girls.

Hi Susan, sorry for late response, we need to tie the manjal saradu around our neck
Thanks Mami. I used to follow ur site for recipes and doubts on the cultural aspect. I have moved to US again. This time I am in a place where I could not get Thengai. Hi Sorry to hear about your wife. I prayed God for her speedy recovery.
The time given is wrong..in India it shud be done between 12.30PM to 1.30PM on 14th March..such wrong timings shud not be given..if not sure.
As per Vakiya Panjagam/Pambu Panjangam the time given is perfectly correct. If i am not sure, i wont publish the information. The time which you have given is for the Northern side of India. Also i have clearly mentioned that the timings are based on Vakiya Panjangam.
hi mami,if this day periods came shall we tie after 3days?or have to tie only after 7days?
Hi , You have to tie the rope after your periods are completely over and it is good if that is a Friday
and how to calculate time on the friday. i am unable to tie manjal saradu in the given time frame( will be at workplace) Please clarify.
I’m sorry, I shifted home so not able to reply. Hope you have done the pooja.
In Chennai, some tiffin houses serve an item called Medhu Ponda (not Mysore Ponda with pepper inside), with sponge like content inside. How to prepare the same? It is available in Sri Venkateswara Poli stall in Arya Gowda street in Mambalam.

Namaskaram Mami,
I have a doubt regarding Karadayan Nombu. I couldn't perform the nombu on Mar 14th because of date/periods problems. Can I perform the nombu on an auspicious day later on? While my mother says I can do it again on an auspicious date later, my MIL says nombu cannot be done in Panguni maasam. Well, I believe nombu should be done in the transition between maasi and panguni, so panguni maasam is there when we normally perform nombu. Please clarify. Thank you for your reply.
Is it necessary to eat a bit of the nombu adai the next day? My MIL used to tell me .What is the significance of this can you let me know?
namaskaram mami

Hi there, for which deity we perform this vratham?
The deity is Goddess Gowri
Nana's karma mami
Thank you very much for guiding us with your wonderful instructions in retaining our tradition
Since I don't have my mother in law to guide me I feel like a blind person… Half knowledge so confused ???? your post is a great help thank you
Someone told me that we Shld not perform this vrata if someone has not given you? (Basically it has to be given by mother in law to daughter in law)
Can any one do this vrata? What kind of fasting has to be performed ( Nirjala till we tie the thread? Or can eat fruits and roots?? )Please guide
Also due to periods I couldn't do so which is the best day/ date to perform this vrata next? Do we have to follow the same procedure? Please guide
Thank you very much
This is not a vrata that has to be a family tradition or to be given by mil or mother. Anyone can perform this vrata to pray for long life of their husband. Also if you are not able to perform due to periods, you can tie the thread on any friday.
Hi, thanks for letting is know the deity, Could you please brief us on the reasons for performing this Vratham apart from the Savithri's fight for her husband. Why it's been done for deity Gowri?
Namaste Mami,
Thanks for putting up lot of detailed information. It helps a lot. This year the nombu is on March 13 th 2016. Since I live in US (Central Time Zone) the timings are as follows;
Karadaiyan Nombu Vratham = 07:49 to 24:57+
Fast Duration = 17 Hours 8 Mins
Manjal Saradu Muhurtham = 24:57+
1. Could you please let me know if I can do the pooja at 1:00 AM US Time?
2. I am staying in a hotel as I am working. I can tie the thread to a small pocket photo of goddess but will have to keep the photo in bag as I can't keep the photo in hotel. In the process the thread will have to be taken out from goddess. I don't know what to do. Please help.
3. I have thread that was tied last year . when I tie the new thread what do I do with the existing thread that is there. Please let me know. At home I have the threads on goddess that was tied last year. what do I do this year since I am staying out of hotel and will go home after two weeks.
4. I will fast the whole day. Can I drink juice in between?
Thanks a lot for all the help.
Hi, sorry for late response. Nowadays many of us are working and it will be tough to stick on to the perfect fasting time. Its the devotion we show to the tradition that matter a lot than the timings. So wear the thread at your convenience on sunday. You can wear the new thread and remove the old thread. You can very well take fruits or juice in between the fasting as you are working and you need energy to work 🙂
Hello Mami,
Thanks for putting up lot of detailed information.
This year the nombu is on March 13 th 2016. Since I live in US (Pacific Time) the timings are as follows;
Karadaiyan Nombu Vratham = begins at 9:48 PM on March 13, 2016 Pacific Standard Time in USA
I have 2 questions.
1. Can I do pooja at 10.00 PM?
2. I am 6 months pregnant and I cannot fast for the whole day. In this case what can i eat the whole day?
3. What can i cook for my family to eat for the whole day?
Hi Anuradha, yes you can do at 10 pm. Please do not fast when you are carrying. Just take enough adai and fluids to keep you and baby healthy. The fast is for the married women. You can cook any normal meals without onion-garlic.
Hello Mami,
Thanks a lot for the response. since I am staying in a hotel how do I pray? I have a small photo of goddess with me which I will use for praying and can I tie the thread to goddess after I go home which is after 2 weeks? OR please advice how do I do pooja in a hotel?
Hi Revathi, You can do this Vrat from your hotel also. You can tie the saradu on your own and pray the god and offer small neyvedhaym with Banana.
Hi mami,
I am newly married girl hasn't aware of this fasting.
Presently I am in hostel. Let me know how to do this fasting with possibly staying in hostel??
Can't prepare those recipes also.
But I am eager to do that fasting.
Could you please help me about the procedure doing hostel itself??
Thank you.
Hi Revathi, You can do this Vrat from your hostel also. You can tie the saradu on your own and pray the god and offer small neyvedhaym with Banana.
Hi mami,
As per my time zone, Karadaiyan Nombu Vratham = 07:43 to 24:57+
Manjal Saradu Muhurtham = 24:57+
Can i tie saradu at 1am cst of 14th march 2016? Pls help..
Hi, Yes, you can tie it at 1 am CST
Hi mam
when the yellow thread in hand for unmarried girls should remove..
When the fasting is to get over…
Hi.. I am a punjabi married to a tamil brahmin. My mother in law doesn't include me in any auspicious pooja. She tells her both the married girls about pooja. This year on 14th March when I woke up I saw they are doing sone pooja, after some time I saw all of them including my sister in law's daughter wearing nombu.
When I asked my mother in law she said I didn't give you nombu as it is your 3rd day of periods.
But tell me please can't I wear it in periods. After reading this article I came to know the importance of this nombu. I'm married since November 2013, but last 2 years I was in delhi. But mom in law never told about it.
I feel so low.
Why tamil people don't live daughter's in law. Only daughter's they love.. Both my sister's in law left their in law's home. They keep interfering here.. I'm so so sad now.. I want this nombu
Sorry to hear. During periods we should not do fasting or do this vrat. Also it has to be done when the tamil month Masi ends and Panguni month begins. Better to do even in Masi month than the Panguni month. So its ok if you miss this year, your intention of doing this nonbu and following tamil tradition itself is great so don't lose hope, try to do this next year.
Mami, namaskaram. On the auspicious day of nombu, somehow or other we forgot the day We were busy. We are seniors. Is it ok we can perform this on some other day or month if so what is the best time and date? We follow your recipes. By God's grace and blessings, we got your site it is is really worth for us to follow tradition even though we are about 3000 miles Is ther

Namaskaram. The Nonbu timings are a bit confusing this year which says 11.30 to 11.56pm IST on 14th March 2018. Is it the time to tie the Manjal Saradu? Looks like its very late in the midnight almost. I heard a total different time from our Purohit (Priest). Can you please clarify?
yes there are lot of debates going on. Some priest from kanchi mutt are saying we can do it between 7.30 and 9.30. My family priest has told me to do at 10.30. Many are telling that its not good to do devi pooja late in the night. So please follow ur priest and tie the nonbu saradu.
Hi
this year we don’t have festival due to demise of in-law’s can we tie the nonbu at some body’s house
yes we can tie the nonbu saradu at somebody’s house

Could you please tell the timing for UAE (Dubai)
Hi, what should we do with the rope put on the Kamakshi amman picture? how long should we keep it there? Also in the place where we currently reside, we dont get fresh flowers.. Can we tie the rope alone?
I generally put it and take out and replace it next year. If you don’t have flowers we can add a turmeric. if not its okay if we don’t have access of flowers
