Mohanthal is a traditional and common Gujarati Snack. Traditionally, this yummy sweet is prepared using khoya which is obviously time consuming. I have given here the condensed milk version which is very instant and within minutes, we could have tastier mohanthal ready in our house. If there are unplanned guests, this is one of the instant sweet we could always think of as we would be having all the required ingredients readily available in our homes.

Method:

  1. Grease a plate or container with little ghee and keep it ready.
  2. Take the gram flour in a mixing bowl and add milk and mix well to crumble the gram flour. Heat ghee in a pan and add gram flour to it and mix well
  3. Keep frying the gram flour till the colour changes to brown. Next, add the condensed milk and keep stirring
  4. The besan and the condensed milk starts to incorporate and becomes a thick mixture. Keep stirring, till the mixture is frothy and starts to roll like a ball without sticking to the sides of the pan. Remove the pan from flame and add the mohanthal mixture to greased plate or container. Sprinkle the chopped almonds and pistachios and pat it with back of a spatula and level the top layer
  5. Allow the mohanthal to cool off fully. Then gently make pieces and carefully remove the mohanthal pieces from container / plate
  6. Yummy and tasty Mohanthal is now ready to taste!

No need for sugar as we are using sweetened condensed milk.

Hi,
I try many of your recipes and they usually come out very well. But Mohantal did not – it was not at all sweet.
Also when I added the Ghee to the gram flour in 1:3 ratio, it was not like the crumble powder shown in step 3, but more like step 4. Can you confirm if the measurements are correct or guess what I could have done wrong?

Hi, Have you used sweetened condensed milk? You get unsweetened condensed milk also in shops. I have used sweetened condensed milk so I have not added any sugar. Also the ratio is perfect. For 3 measures of gram flour, we need to add 1 measure of ghee. So obviously the ghee is 1 part of the gram flour, so the gram flour will become crumble and then after adding condensed milk only it will become as a whole mass of mixture. Have you first crumble the gram flour with little milk?

Thanks Sowmya for the response. I have used sweetened condensed milk. I did crumble it with milk too. I will try again in small quantity and let you know. This seems to be so easy – that I want to learn it and make it well.

No cardamon added in this. Is that an option for mohanthal?

1/2 cup of ghee was not enough roast and 1/2 cup of condensed milk did not bind flour in the lump , Luckly I had some gulag Jumun chasni so I added 1/2 cup of chasni then it turn in to lumpy mass. I think measurements needs to change .
