Radish Chutney is a unique chutney variety. We can make many different yummy dishes with radish. Typical South Indian especially Tamil Nadu house hold uses radish to make Sambar, poriyal or kootu. In North India we use mooli for thepla, paratha etc. We can also make delicious chutney out of radish. Radish is known for its pungent smell which is why some people don't include radish as part of their diet. But it is one of the nutritional rich vegetable. We need to include the right ingredients that go with radish to make the recipes interesting and yummy!. In this Mullangi chutney we are going to enhance the chutney with onion, tamarind and other spices which makes the chutney more delicious and delectable to relish with Idli/Dosa!

Tips for making Radish Chutney:

  1. We can use wither white or red radish for this recipe.
  2. We can also chop the radish but grated radish cooks faster.
  3. If you like you can include 2-3 garlic cloves along with onion.
  4. Instead of tamarind you can use 1 tomato.
  5. Coriander leaves are optional but it really adds a nice flavor to the chutney.
  6. Adjust the quantity red chili according to your taste.

Ingredients

  • 250 gms Radish
  • 1 no Onion cubed
  • 1 pinch Turmeric Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 handful Coriander Leaves
  • 2 teaspoon Split Bengal Gram (Channa Dal / Kadalaparuppu)
  • 2 teaspoon Urad Dal
  • 4 nos Red Chili
  • 1 blueberry size Tamarind
  • 2 tablespoon Oil
  • Few Curry leaves
  • 2 tablespoon Grated Coconut

For Tempering

  • 2 teaspoon Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • Few Curry leaves

Instructions 

Prepare Radish

  • Wash the radish thoroughly, peel and grate the radish. Set the grated radish aside.
    250 gms Radish

Tempering

  • Heat 2 teaspoon of oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Allow it to sputter. Add a handful of curry leaves and switch off the flame. Take these tempered ingredients aside in a bowl.
    Few Curry leaves, 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds, 1 teaspoon Cumin Seeds, 2 teaspoon Oil

Prepare Grinding Ingredients

  • Heat a teaspoon of oil in a pan. Add chana dal, urad dal, red chili. Fry till the dal turns light golden. Set this roasted ingredients aside.
    2 teaspoon Split Bengal Gram (Channa Dal / Kadalaparuppu), 2 teaspoon Urad Dal, 2 tablespoon Oil, 4 nos Red Chili
  • In the same pan, add 2 tablespoon oil. Add cubed onions to the pan. Saute the onions till it is translucent.
    1 no Onion
  • To the pan, add grated radish along with pinch of tamarind, turmeric powder, curry leaves and salt. Give a good mix. Saute the grated radish till it is soft and cooked. Allow this sautéed ingredients to cool off.
    1 pinch Turmeric Powder, 1 teaspoon Salt, 1 blueberry size Tamarind, Few Curry leaves

Grinding Process

  • Take the roasted dal and chili in a mixer jar. Add grated coconut and grind it till the chili is ground to powder.
    2 tablespoon Grated Coconut
  • Now, add the sautéed onion and radish to the mixer jar. Also add handful of coriander leaves.
    1 handful Coriander Leaves
  • Add water and grind everything to a smooth paste. Pour this chutney in the bowl having tempering ingredients. Give a good stir.
  • Radish Chutney is now ready! Relish with Idli/dosa and enjoy your chutney!
