Samai Aloo Tikki (Little Millet Potato Cutlet), a very appetizing and yummy dish also we are using millet which is really healthy. Samai (Little millet) like other millets packed with nutrients. We can make many wonderful dishes with Samai. Usually, I make Payasam, Kichadi and Pongal with samai. Any rice based recipe can easily be substituted with millets. I have explained about the nutritional benefits of Saamai (Little Millet) in Little millet Kichadi Recipe. Such a nutritional rich millet should be included frequently in our diet.

This samai cutlet/tikki is very simple to make. The cooked samai along with mashed potatoes bind well easily and makes our process of shaping cutlet easier than regular veg cutlet. We can bring in many variations to this cutlet recipe. I made this yummy dish on a fasting day so I didn’t add rich masala or onions. But we can very well add onions and other vegetables and make this dish even more tastier.

Tips for making Samai Aloo Tikki:

  1. We need well cooked samai at the same time it should not be too watery.
  2. For 1/2 cup of little millet, add 1.25 cups of water and pressure cook for 2-3 whistles and allow the pressure to release naturally.
  3. Along with potato, we can add cooked mixed vegetables like green peas, beans, carrot etc.
  4. Shape the cutlet mixture to desired shape. We can shape like a disc or an oval or heart shaped cutlet.
  5. Shallow fry in low flame, flipping gently on both the sides and cook the tikki till its golden brown.
