Tava Idli | Spicy Tava Idli | Tawa Idli

Idli is a conventional breakfast dish in Southern Parts of India. Idli is a healthy dish too as we are steam cooking it without adding any oil. Though Idli is very healthy, many of the kids even adults doesn't like to have Idli. So, to make the Idli more appetizing, we can make many varieties and variations and treat out kids and family. One such variety is Spicy Tava Idli. Cooked Idlis are tossed in tawa along with capsicum, onion, tomatoes, peas and spice powders that make the whole dish appealing and increase the appetite to have more servings!!!

Tips for making Spicy Tava Idli:

  1. We can use left over idli for this recipe. If you have fresh idli, allow it to cool for sometime before you cube them. If you use refrigerated left over idli, drop the idli in hot water and squeeze and take out immediately.
  2. Adding capsicum and peas is optional. We can exclude veggies or we can include more veggies like carrot, beans etc.
  3. If you don't have Pav Bhaji masala, you can use regular garam masala.
  4. Add lemon juice once you switch off the flame.

You may also want to try:

  • Kaima Idli : a delicious delicacy made with left over idli. Left over idli' are diced, deep fried and tossed in onion-tomato masala with rich spices. Relish this scrumptious Kaima Idli with onion raita!
  • Idli Tikka : an easy snack with Leftover Idli! Mini Idlis' or cubed left over idli's are marinated with thick curd along with spices, capsicum, onions and are then grilled or shallow fired in a tawa. This is really a very mouth-watering easy snack!
  • Punugulu: a popular snack from Andhara cusine made using idli/dosa batter. It's a popular teatime snack / street food usually served with peanut/coconut chutney.

Tava Idli is one of the popular menu item in the Restaurants. The left over idli are cooked in Tava (Tawa) with spices and vegetable. Onion, Tomoatos and Capsicum are usually added while cooking Tava Idli. This can be served as an evening Tiffen or as a breakfast.

Ingredients

  • 8 nos Idli left over Idli can be used

Vegetables

  • 1 nos Onion finely chopped
  • 1 no Tomato Roughly chopped
  • ½ no Green Capsicum finaly chopped
  • 2 tablespoon green peas

Masala Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon Ginger Garlic Paste
  • ¼ teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Red Chili Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Pav Bhaji Masala
  • 2 tablespoon Butter
  • 1 no Green Chili
  • 1 tablespoon Coriander Leaves For Garnishing

Instructions 

  • Chop the steam cooked idlis into medium sized cubes. (Optional - If you are using left over idlis and if they are dry, then just soak it in warm water for a minute and then squeeze out the water. By doing this we can get soft idli.)
  • Melt butter in a pan. Add green chili and give a mix.
  • Now, add chopped onion along with ginger-garlic paste. Saute onions till translucent.
  • Then, add chopped tomatoes to the pan. Add pan bhaji masala, red chili powder and salt. Give a good mix.
  • Cook till tomatoes are soft. Now add chopped capsicum and green peas. Also add turmeric powder. Add ½ cup of water and allow the veggies to cook till veggies are soft but little crunchy.
  • Now add the cubed idli to the masala. Give a gentle mix.
  • Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and switch off the flame.
  • Finally add lemon juice and give a mix.
  • The delicious Spicy Tava Idli is now ready to serve!!!
