Street Side Style White Peas Masala Gravy | White Peas Masala Gravy Chaat








Beach Sundal, Beach Pattani (Peas) gravy is a popular road side snack. It's usually served in a bowl mixed with broken Vada / Samos and topped up with finely chopped onion and sev. A filling and healthy snack for the evening.
White Peas chaat is one of the popular road side snack in many parts of India, espcially famous in the Chennai Beaches. We love eating hot and steaming peas masala chaat in the breezy air. Usually they add broken samosa and then on top of it masala gravy is added and finally garnish with fresh onions, coriander leaves etc., This mouthwatering chaat is nutrition rich too as we are using dried peas which are rich in dietary fiber and proteins. Making this nutritional rich White Peas Masala Gravy / Yellow Peas Masala Chaat at home gives us a benefit of intaking such healthy chaat in the evening and also its more hygienic. This chaat is lip smacking, perfect for the evening snack or also can be served as a side dish for roti/poori.
Tips for making White Peas Masala Gravy
- Soaking White Peas – The Peas needs to be soaked overnight to cook for the next day. Alternatively you can also soak just for 4 hours but in the hot water or cook this instantly by adding 2 pinch of soda salt.
- Cooking the Peas – Pressure cook the peas over 5-6 whistles. For this dish, we need perfectly boild peanuts.
- To get thick gravy – While cooking the peas in onion tomato masala, add 2 cups of water to adjust the consistency of the gravy. Also mash few peases roughly with the back side of the ladle. This help to get thicker gravy.
- Toppings – Serve with the toppings of your choice – finely chopped onion, coriander leaves, tomato, sev, etc.,

Ingredients
- 1 cup Dried Yellow Peas 1 cup = 250 ml
- 1 Onion finely chopped
- 2 Tomato finely chopped
- ½ tbsp Ginger Chopped
- ½ tbsp Garlic Chopped
- ¼ tsp Turmeric Powder
- 1 tsp Coriander Powder
- 1 tsp Red Chili Powder
- ½ tsp Peper Powder
- ½ tsp Garam Masala Powder
- 1½ tsp Salt adjust to your taste
- For Garnishing Coriander Leaves
- 1 tbsp Sev
For Tempering
- 2 tbsp Cooking Oil
- 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
- 1 tsp Fennel Seeds
Instructions
- Wash and Soak the Dried Yellow Peas and set it aside overnight or for atleast 12 hours.
- Drain the water. Add Fresh water to soak the peas along with salt and pressure cook it allowing for 5-6 whistles
- Heat oil in a heavy bottomed pan. Add mustard seeds and allow it to sputter, then add fennel seeds. To this now add chopped ginger & garlic and saute for a minute
- Then add finely chopped onions and saute till the onions turn transparent. Then add chopped tomato
- After adding tomato, add salt that is required for this dish along with red chii powder, coriander powder and turmeric powder and mix everything well. Allow the tomatoes to cook till it gets mushy
- Then, add cooked peas and mix well. Add 2 cups of water and stir well. Keep the flame low and allow the peas to cook in low flame for 10-12 minutes. The peas will absorb the masala and the gravy thickens a bit. We need little watery consistency for this recipe
- After 10 minutes, add pepper powder, garam masala and stir well and switch off the flame. Finally garnish with coriander leaves. Just before serving, garnish with freshly chopped onions along with coriander leaves and sev

Preparation with step by step pictures :
- Wash and Soak the Dried Yellow (white) Peas and set it aside overnight or for atleast 12 hours.
- Next morning, drain the water. Add Fresh water to soak the peas along with salt.
- Pressure cook it allowing for 5-6 whistles or till it gets nicely soft and mushy.
- Once the pressure is fully released, open the cooker lid and check if the peas is cooked nicely. If you take a cooked pea and mush it, it should mush easily.
- Take an onion and finely chop it and keep it aside.
- Next, take a big tomato and chop it into cubes and set aside.
- Also chop the garlic and ginger and finely chop it.
- Heat oil in a heavy bottomed pan. Add mustard seeds and allow it to sputter, then add fennel seeds.
- To this now add chopped ginger & garlic and saute for a minute.
- Add finely chopped onions and saute till the onions turn transparent.
- Then add chopped tomato to the pan.
- After adding tomato, add salt that is required for this dish along with red chili powder, coriander powder and turmeric powder and mix everything well.
- Add 1/2 cup of water and allow the tomatoes to cook till it gets mushy.
- Then, add cooked peas and mix well.
- Add 2 cups of water and stir well. Keep the flame low and allow the peas to cook in low flame for 10-12 minutes. In between mash some of the peas.
- The peas will absorb the masala and the gravy thickens a bit. We need little watery consistency for this recipe. Adjust water and cook in closed pan for 5 more mins.
- After 10 minutes, add pepper powder, garam masala and stir well and switch off the flame.
- Finally garnish with coriander leaves.
- Just before serving, garnish with freshly chopped onions, tomatoes along with coriander leaves and sev.

Hi, I tried similar version previously. all I get is North Indian side dish type . How to bring it to typical south Indian style ??
South Indian is all about red chili, coconut . Try grinding red chili, coconut and roasted gram dal and add it to the cooked peas

yes surely we can prepare without tomato. If you want a taste of tangy, we can add a teaspoon of lemon juice.
