Thengai Thogayal is a traditional chutney made using fresh grated coconut along with dals and spices. This is an accompaniment to the rice and usually served with ghee / gingelly oil. Sometimes, we look for some recipe which is quick and easy to make. Coconut Thogayal (Thengai Thogayal) is one easy to make dish which can be mixed with hot steaming rice or can be served as a side dish for variety rice like lemon rice etc.

Few tips to make tasty Thengai Thogayal

  • Thogayal is usually made thick and with coarse texture. However you can adjust the water to make it as per your liking.
  • We usually don't do tempering for making thogayal. If you are planning to use this a chutney as an accompaniment to Idli / Dosa, then you can add the tempering.
  • Add water little by little while grinding the thogayal
  • Adjust the spice (Red Chili, Pepper) based on your liking

Thengai Thogayal is a traditional and simple rice accompaniment prepared using coconut as a main ingredient. It's usually served with hot rice and spoon of gingelly oil or ghee. It can be prepared quickly and perfect for the busy days.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Grated Coconut 1 cup = 250 ml
  • 1 tablespoon Urad Dal
  • 1 tablespoon Split Bengal Gram (Channa Dal / Kadalaparuppu)
  • 4 nos Red Chili
  • ½ teaspoon Peppercorns optional
  • 1 pinch Asafoetida (Asafetida / Hing)
  • 1 cranberry size Tamarind ¼ teaspoon of Tamarind Paste
  • 1 teaspoon Salt adjust to your taste
  • 2 teaspoon Coconut Oil or any cooking oil

Instructions 

  • Heat oil in a pan. Add urad dal, bengal gram dal, red chili and peppercorns and fry till the dal turns light brown color
  • Then, add grated coconut, tamarind and asafoetida and fry till the coconut turns light brown color. If you are using tamarind paste, then you can add it directly to the mixer.
  • Cool all the roasted ingredients and take it to a mixer jar along with salt. Grind everything to a coarse paste
  • Now the Thengai Thuvayal is ready to serve with hot rice

Method to make Thengai Thogayal with step by step pictures :

  • Heat oil in a pan. Add urad dal, bengal gram dal, red chili and peppercorns

  • Fry till the dal turns light brown color

  • Then, add grated coconut, tamarind and asafoetida and fry till the coconut turns light brown color

  • Cool all the roasted ingredients and take it to a mixer jar along with salt.

  • Now the Thengai Thuvayal is ready to serve with hot rice
