Vijayadasami Recipes
The tenth day and final day of Navrathri, Vijayadasami, is considered to be the most auspicious day to begin new ventures. Vijayadasami is considered as “Victory Day”. The Goddess has been rigorously in war with the Asuras for 9 days and she won the war and became calm and kind on this Vijayadasami Day. Praying to Goddess Saraswathi, Lakshmi and Durga on this auspicious day bless us with all wealth and prosperity. The famous Mysore Dusshera festival also happens on this day.
On the day of Vijayadasami, the books, cashbox and tools offered to the goddess on Saraswathi pooja are taken back with a ceremony named ‘Poojayeduppu’ (in tamil). We offer Payasam as Prasad for the Goddess and we make the kids learn at least a paragraph in each of their subjects. Also we make them practice their singing, play their instrument, or play their favorite sport hoping that that particular art will grow and cherish further. We believe that new venture we start on this day, will be a success.
Story behind Vijayadasami:
Vijayadashami is observed for different reasons and celebrated differently in various parts of South Asia. In the southern, eastern and northeastern states of India, Vijayadashami marks the end of Durga Puja, remembering goddess Durga’s victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura to restore and protect dharma.
In the northern and western states, the festival is synonymously called Dussehra. It marks the end of “Ramlila” and remembers God Rama’s victory over the Demon Ravanan. On Dussehra, the towering effigies of Ravanan symbolizing the evil are burnt with fireworks marking evil’s destruction. The festival also starts the preparation for one of the most important and widely celebrated Diwali, the festival of lights, which is celebrated twenty days after the Vijayadashami.
Vidhyarambam
Another hallmark of this day is the Vidyarambham ceremony which is celebrated in Kerala and southern part of Tamil Nadu, in which small children are initiated into the world of letters by elders. This ceremony is held in temples as well as in various cultural institutions. Also in this particular day the small children start their school.
The mantra “Om hari sri Ganapataye namah” is written on sand or a tray of rice grains. Then the priest/Guru will write the same mantra on the kids tongue with gold. This is to invoke the grace of the goddess of Learning by which the one attains the wealth of knowledge.
