Peerkangai Kootu Recipe | Ridge Gourd Stew Recipe

Peerkangai (Ridge Gourd) Kootu is made by cooking the vegetable in the dal & coconut mixture. This is easy to make and also very tasty. It's rich in dietary fiber,so it's good to use this vegetable regularly in our regular diet.

  • 250 grams Ridge Gourd (Peerkangai)
  • ½ tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 1 tsp Salt adjust to your taste
  • ¼ cup Moong dal 1 cup = 250 ml

For Grinding

  • 2 tbsp Grated Coconut
  • 1 tsp Peppercorns
  • ½ tsp Cumin Seeds

For Tempering

  • 1 tsp Cooking Oil
  • 1 tsp Split Urid Dal
  • 1 nos Red Chili
  • Few Curry leaves



  • Remove the seeds and finely chop the Ridgegourd. If the Ridgegourd is tender, we can also include the seeds as they would be very tender.
  • Take the chopped Ridgegourd  in a vessel and add salt and turmeric and pressure cook it. Allow 2-3 whishles.
  • Also pressure cook the moong dal

Grinding the Coconut Paste

  • While the Ridgegourd and moong dal is being cooked in the pressure cooker, we can take the grinding ingredients in the mixer and grind it to a nice paste 

Making of the Kootu

  • Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds. When the mustard seeds starts to sputter, add urid dal and fry till the dal turns golden brown color. Add the broken red chilli and curry leaves and fry for 10 seconds.
  • To this add the cooked Ridgegourd and mix well. Adjust the salt if needed. 
  • Next, add cooked and mashed dal and mix well.
  • Then add ground paste and stir well
  • Allow the stew to boil for 5 minutes and remove from flame. Add a teaspoon of coconut oil and some tore curry leaves and stir well
  • Serve this yummy Peerkangai Kootu (Ridge Gourd Stew) with hot boiled rice and slurp!
