Mochai Sundal | Mochai Payaru Sundal | Butter Beans Sundal
Mochai Sundal is one of the sundal made using Navartatri as an offering to the goddess and distribute to children and neighbors. It is protein packed and highly nutritious. This can also be prepared for the evening snack. We usually use the dry mochai to make this sundal.

Pressure Cooker
Heavy Bottomed Pan
- 1 cup Butter Beans (Mochai Payiru) 1 cup = 250 ml
- 2 tbsp Grated Coconut
- 1 tsp Salt adjust to your taste
- 1 nos Red Chili
- 2 tsp Sundal Powder (or 1 tsp Sambar Powder)
For Tempering
- 2 tsp Oil
- 1 tsp Mustard seeds
- 1 pinch Asafoetida (Asafetida / Hing)
- few Curry Leaves
Soak the Butter beans / Mochai in water overnight
The next day pressure cook the butter beans / Mochai and allow for 3 whistles
Heat the pan, pour some oil and add mustard seeds. Once the mustard seeds begins to sputter, add hing, curry leaves and then add the cooked Mochai and sundal powder and salt and mix it well
Finally add the grated coconut and mix it well
The delicious Mochai Payiru (Butter Beans sundal is ready for neivedhyam and for serving
- If you don't have Sundal Powder / patience to make Sundal Powder then you can add Sambar powder instead.
