Onion Gotsu Recipe | Venkaya Kothsu Recipe | Vengaya Gotsu for Pongal

Ingredients

  • 1 lemon size Tamarind
  • 15 nos Shallots / Baby Onions
  • 1 nos Tomato big, sliced
  • 1 pinch Turmeric Powder
  • 1 tablespoon Jaggery grated
  • 1 teaspoon Salt (adjust to your taste)

For Tempering

  • 1 tablespoon Gingelly Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Split Bengal Gram (Channa Dal / Kadalaparuppu)
  • 6 nos Red Chili broken, (adjust to your spice level)
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves

Instructions

  • Soak tamarind in water for 10 minutes and extract the juice
  • Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and allow it to sputter. Add bengal gram dal and sauté till the dal becomes light golden color
  • Then add broken red chili, curry leaves and saute for few seconds
  • Now, add the chopped onions along with turmeric powder and pinch of salt and sauté onions till transparent
  • Then, add tomato pieces and sauté the tomatoes for 2 minutes
  • Add the tamarind extract along with salt and allow the tamarind extract to boil till the raw smell goes off
  • Once the tamarind extract has boiled nicely, add water to adjust the sourness and consistency. Also add grated jaggery and allow the gotsu to boil for 5 minutes and then switch off the flame
  • The yummy and tasty Onion Gotsu Ready to be served. Best combination for Venpongal!

Notes

  1. You can replace tamarind with Tamarind paste. 
  2. You can also add 1 or 2 green chili (and reduce sambar powder) for good flavor
  3. Serve with a teaspoon of gingelly oil.
