Sweet Potato Curry | Sakaravelli Kizhangu Podi Pota Poriyal

Sweet Potato is one of the nutritional root vegetable. We can make tasty Sweet Potato poriyal with freshly ground spice powder. This goes as a side dish with any South Indian meals

Equipment

  • 1 Mixer Grinder
  • 1 Heavy Bottomed Pan

Ingredients

  • ½ kg Sweet Potato
  • ½ teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • teaspoon Salt

For Spice Powder

  • 1 tablespoon Split Bengal Gram (Channa Dal / Kadalaparuppu)
  • 1 tablespoon Coriander Seeds
  • 2 nos Red Chili adjust to your spice needs
  • 1 tablespoon Oil

For Tempering

  • 1 teaspoon Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Split Urad Dal

Instructions

  • Heat oil in a pan, add grinding ingredients and saute them in oil till the dals turn golden brown color.
  • Remove these fried ingredients and add it to the mixer and grind them to nice and smooth powder.
  • Our spice powder is now ready.
  • Wash and peel the sweet potatoes and chop them into small cubes. Take the chopped sweet potatoes in a sauce pan and add water to soak the potato.Add turmeric powder, salt and keep it in flame. Allow the sweet potatoes are cooked and becomes tender and soft
  • Drain excess water from cooked sweet potatoes using a strainer.
  • Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. When the mustard seeds starts to sputter, add split urid dal and fry till the dals turn golden color. 
  • Add the cooked sweet potatoes to the pan and mix well. Then add the ground spice powder and give it a good mix. 
  • Stir-fry the potatoes in medium flame for a couple of minutes and then switch off the flame.
  • Sweet Potato Spice Curry is now ready to serve!!! Serve with any rice or roti and enjoy the dish!!!
