Mullangi Kootu | Radish Kootu Recipe

Mullangi kootu, a traditional stew made with white radish, bengal gram, coconut, red chili and jeera and topped with mustard and curry leaves tadka. This is a perfect accompaniment for Rasam, sambar or any South Indian Main Course

Equipment

  • Pressure Cooker
  • Heavy Bottomed Pan
  • Mixer Grinder

Ingredients

  • 250 gms Radish washed, peeled and Chopped
  • ¼ Cup Split Bengal Gram (Channa Dal / Kadalaparuppu)
  • ¼ teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Adjust As Needed

For Grinding

  • ½ Cup Grated Coconut
  • 2 Red Chili
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin Seeds

For Tempering

  • 2 teaspoon Coconut Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Split Urad Dal
  • Few Curry leaves

Instructions

Cooking Radish and Dal

  • Take the chopped radish in a vessel. Add bengal gram dal to the radish.
  • Add turmeric powder, salt and water. Pressure Cook for 3 whistles. Set this aside

Grinding Process

  • Take the grated coconut, red chili and cumin seeds and grind it to paste Set this paste aside

Tempering Process

  • Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and allow it to sputter. Then add split urad dal and give a mix. Then add curry leaves and mix once

Finishing Kootu

  • Add the cooked radish and dal to the pan. Add the ground coconut-spice paste and stir well. Adjust salt if needed
  • Bring the kootu to boil and switch off the flame. The delicious Radish Kootu is now ready to serve!

Notes

  1. Coconut oil always give a nice flavor, but we can use any cooking oil
