Thengai Thogayal | Cocunut Thogayal | Thengai Thogayal Recipe

Thengai Thogayal is a traditional and simple rice accompaniment prepared using coconut as a main ingredient. It's usually served with hot rice and spoon of gingelly oil or ghee. It can be prepared quickly and perfect for the busy days.

Equipment

  • Mixer Grinder
  • Heavy Bottomed Pan

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Grated Coconut 1 cup = 250 ml
  • 1 tablespoon Urad Dal
  • 1 tablespoon Split Bengal Gram (Channa Dal / Kadalaparuppu)
  • 4 nos Red Chili
  • ½ teaspoon Peppercorns optional
  • 1 pinch Asafoetida (Asafetida / Hing)
  • 1 cranberry size Tamarind ¼ teaspoon of Tamarind Paste
  • 1 teaspoon Salt adjust to your taste
  • 2 teaspoon Coconut Oil or any cooking oil

Instructions

  • Heat oil in a pan. Add urad dal, bengal gram dal, red chili and peppercorns and fry till the dal turns light brown color
  • Then, add grated coconut, tamarind and asafoetida and fry till the coconut turns light brown color. If you are using tamarind paste, then you can add it directly to the mixer.
  • Cool all the roasted ingredients and take it to a mixer jar along with salt. Grind everything to a coarse paste
  • Now the Thengai Thuvayal is ready to serve with hot rice
