Generally we make kunukku with left over adai batter. Adai batter is made using rice and mixed dal along with red chilies. Any left over adai batter can easily made into kunukku batter with chopped onions, green chili, coriander leaves. Along with this we can enhance the batter with roasted peanuts. Peanuts are also soaked along with rice, mixed dals grind into batter. This batter is then made into small dumplings and deep fried till it's golden brown. With rich peanut flavor this kunukku is a perfect tea time snack.
I made this on a fasting day, so didn't use onions. But for normal days, we can add finely chopped onions, green chili, coriander leaves to the batter and make it much more interesting and flavorful. Serve this crispy Peanut Kunukku with Coconut chutney or Coriander chutney or even with ketchup.
Tips for making Verkadalai Kunukku Recipe | Peanut Spice Balls Recipe:
- Use raw peanuts without skin.
- We can wash and soak peanuts, dals, rice together. Soak for atleast 2 hours.
- Adjust red chilies according to your spice levels.
- Deep fry the kunukku till golden brown in low flame.

Ingredients
- 1 Cup Peanuts Use peanuts without skin. 1 Cup - 250ml
- ¼ Cup Raw Rice
- ¼ Cup Urad Dal
- ¼ Cup Split Bengal Gram (Channa Dal / Kadalaparuppu)
- 1 teaspoon Salt Adjust as needed
- 4 Red Chili
- ¼ teaspoon Asafoetida (Asafetida / Hing)
- 2 Cups Oil For Deep Frying
Instructions
- Take a mixing bowl and add peanuts, red chillies, urdal, channa dal and raw rice in water for about 2 hours. After 2 hours, drain water from the mixing bowl.
- Add soaked peanuts, dals and rice to the mixer along with red chillies and grind it to a coarse paste.
- Heat oil in a pan. When the oil is hot, make small balls out of the ground paste and gently drop it in oil.
- Deep fry the peanut balls till they are golden brown and becomes crispy. Remove the fried peanut balls and place it in a paper towel to drain the excess oil. Repeat the step for the rest of the ground paste and fry all the peanut balls
- The crispy and tasty Peanut Spice Balls (Verkadalai Kunukku) is now ready to serve!
