Kollu podi, a spicy and tasty homemade powder made with protein rich horsegram along with Indian spices. This kollu podi is much similar to paruppu podi. My MIL's version of making Paruppu podi also includes kollu as one of the ingredient though toor dal is the main ingredient in that. Here, in this kollu podi recipe, Horse gram is the main and single grain used along with other spices like garlic, peppercorns. A very tasty mix for hot rice along with a teaspoon of ghee.

What is Kollu?

Kollu is called “Horsegram” in English. In traditional Ayurvedic cuisine, horse gram is considered a food with medicinal qualities. It is rich in protein and very less in fat. The cooked Kollu is not so tasty like other legumes. Thats the reason it was being very underutilized.  It is gaining popular nowadays because people are finding ways to include more healthier ingredients in their diet and stay fit.

Does Horsegram helps to lose weight?

Yes, as per the experts and nutrients it does helps in staying fit. The main reason is that the Kollu provides adequate nutrients to the body. Here are the 5 reasons how Horsegram helps to stay fit

  1. Low in fat : This pulse is low in fat but high in carbohydrates that makes us feel full even eating very little amount of Kollu
  2. High in Calcium, Iron and Protein: This is one of the pulse that has highest calcium content and also very rich vegetarian source of protein.

Tips for making Kollu Podi:

  1. Fry the kollu till it sputters like mustard seeds. Then only we can get rid of the raw taste of the horsegram.
  2. Fry the kollu in low flame to prevent it from getting burnt.
  3. Always cool the roasted ingredients for atleast 10 mins, before grinding. If we grind it hot, sometimes the heat releases moisture.
  4. Once the podi ready, allow it to cool off completely and then store the Kollu podi in an air-tight container for longer shelf life.
  5. Always use fresh dry spoon while serving to have longer shelf-life of the podi.
