Broken Wheat Upma Kozhukattai | Samba Godhumai Rava Upma Kozhukattai
Traditional upma kozhukattai is made using raw rice. The same recipe we can do with daliya (broken wheat). Broken Wheat Upma Kozhukattai | Samba Godhumai Rava Upma Kozhukattai, a very scrumptious breakfast dish which is healthy too. Nutritionists and dietitians recommend broken wheat as a substitute for rice. Most of the dishes we do with rice or the normal semolina, we can try the same dishes with samba godhumai and it would also be delicious as the traditional. Broken wheat contains virtually no fat, and is free of saturated fats and trans fats.

Broken Wheat Upma Kozhukattai | Samba Godhumai Rava Upma Kozhukattai
Equipments Needed
- Mixer Grinder
- Pressure Cooker
Ingredients
- 1 cup Samba Godhumai (Broken Wheat) 1 cup = 250 ml
- ¼ cup Split Bengal Gram (Channa Dal / Kadalaparuppu)
- 2 nos Red Chili
- ¼ cup Grated Coconut
- 2 cups Water
- 1 tsp Salt adjust to your taste
For Tempering
- 1 tbsp Cooking Oil
- 1 tsp Mustard seeds
- 1 tsp Split Bengal Gram (Channa Dal / Kadalaparuppu)
- 1 tsp Split Urad Dal
- 1 pinch Asafoetida (Asafetida / Hing)
- few Curry Leaves
Instructions
- Soak the channa dal and red chilli in water for half an hour.
- Meanwhile, heat a pan, add broken wheat and dry roast it for 3-4 minutes till we get a nice aroma
- After 30 minutes, drain the water from the dal and add the dal and red chilli to the mixer and grind it to a nice paste
- Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds. When the mustard seeds starts to sputter, add chana dal and urad dal and fry till the dals turn brown colour. Add hing, curry leaves and fry for 10 seconds
- Add water along with grated coconut and ground paste and bring the water to boil. When the water starts to boil, add salt and broken wheat and mix well with the ladle to mix the wheat evenly without forming lumps. Keep the flame medium and allow the broken wheat to cook and the water to drain
- Allow the half-cooked, broken wheat upma to cool off. Then take lemon sized upma and roll it to make like kozhukattai. Grease the idli plates and place the upma kozhukattai and steam cook for 10 minutes.
- Serve the steam cooked Broken Wheat Upma Kozhukattai | Samba Godhumai Rava Upma Kozhukattai with coconut chutney or tomato chutney
