Koodaravalli

Last Updated On: Jan 11, 2025 by Sowmya Venkatachalam

It is believed that during the Margazhi month, Sri Andal Nachiar sang one verse of the Thirupavai (comprising 30 verses) each day in praise of Lord Narayana. On the 27th day, while singing the verse “Koodarai Vellum Seer Govinda”, Lord Narayana blessed Sri Andal with Thirukalyana Varam (the boon of divine marriage).

Thus, the 27th day of Margazhi is celebrated as Koodaravalli. On this day, Sri Andal and her companions conclude their fast and prepare to rejoice during the final three days of the month.

The 27th pasuram, “Koodarai Vellum”, symbolizes the culmination of their fast and marks a joyous occasion.

Meaning:

Oh Lord Govinda, who triumphs over all those who fail to align with Your divine will, the reward we receive for singing Your praises as part of our vow will be the joy of adorning ourselves with exquisite ornaments on our hands, ears, and feet, so splendid that the entire town will speak of them. We will drape ourselves in elegant garments, prepare rice cooked in milk, and generously mix it with ghee, allowing the ghee to envelop the dish, savoring its rich and delightful flavor.

This year, Koodaravalli is celebrated on January 11, 2025. Every year, Koodaravalli falls on the 27th day of the Margazhi month (December–January).

On this auspicious day, Lord Narayana blessed Sri Andal with the boon of divine marriage. Devotees visit temples, offer ghee-filled Akaravadisal to Lord Govinda, and mark the conclusion of the Margazhi month Nonbu (fast).
