2 Teaspoon Whole Urad Dal
1 Teaspoon Split Bengal Gram (Channa Dal / Kadalaparuppu)
2 Red Chili
1 Green Chilli
1 Gooseberry Size Tamarind
1 Tablespoon Grated Coconut
Few Curry Leaves
To Taste Salt
2 Tablespoon Oil

We can make thogayal with plain dal and spices or just with coconut and spices. Also we can use many veggies to make thogayal. We can use chow chow (Chayote squash), Ridge gourd, Pumpkin, brinjal etc. Beetroot thogayal is also one of the delicious thogayal variety made with beetroot along with spices.

Thogayal is one of the easiest recipe we can make quickly without complex procedures and with hot steaming rice, thogayal tastes divine. Thogayal with sutta appalam (Toasted papad) is one of the yummiest South Indian Food. Still some of you may not like thogayal because they feel its very dry but with little sesame oil or ghee, thogayal tastes much yummier than we think. For more thogayal varieties click here.

Ingredients

  • 1 finely Beetroot Chopped
  • 2 tsp Whole Urad Dal
  • 1 tsp Split Bengal Gram (Channa Dal / Kadalaparuppu)
  • 2 Red Chili
  • 1 Green Chilli
  • 1 gooseberry Tamarind Size
  • 1 tbsp Grated Coconut
  • Curry Leaves Few
  • Salt To Taste
  • 2 tbsp Oil

Instructions

Frying Dals

  • Heat a teaspoon of oil in a pan. Add urad dal, bengal gram dal, red chili. Fry till golden brown and keep it aside.

Fry other ingredients

  • Heat another 2 teaspoon of oil. Add green chili, tamarind and few curry leaves and fry in oil. Then add grated coconut and fry till light brown. Take these grinding ingredients separately in another plate

Cook Beetroot

  • Next to the same pan, add a tablespoon of oil. Add chopped beetroot and mix well. Add required salt for the thogayal and cover the pan with the lid and let the beetroot gets cooked nicely. Once the beetroot are soft, switch off the flame. Le the cooked beetroot cool down completely

Grinding Process

  • First take the fried dals in a mixer jar and grind it to a coarse powder. Then add the rest of the fried ingredients along with cooked beetroot and grind again to a coarse paste without adding any water. Add/sprinkle water only if necessary. Take the ground beetroot thogayal in a serving cup.

Serving Time!

  • Serve the yummy and healthy Beetroot Thogayal with hot steaming rice along with teaspoon of gingelly oil / ghee and enjoy the food.
