Vengaya Kootu (Onion Dal Stew)

Vengaya kootu is very simple to make and it is a great side dish for rice as well as Chapati. The main ingredient is pepper-cumin seeds.

Ingredients:
Moong Dal ½ Cup
Onion 3
Turmeric a Pinch
Salt To Taste
Pepper 1 teaspoon
Cumin Seeds 1 teaspoon


Ingredients For Seasoning:

Mustard Seeds 1 teaspoon
Oil 2 teaspoon

Method:

  1. Wash and pressure cook the dal and allow for 2 whistles. The dal should not be smashed but should be cooked completely
  2. Grind the pepper and cumin to a coarse powder. Finely chop the onions and keep it aside
  3. Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds. When the mustard seeds starts to sputter, add chopped onions and saute well in a medium flame for about 10 minutes. Add a pinch of salt to bring out the moisture from the onion and to cook them evenly. Add pepper-cumin coarse powder and mix well
  4. After the onions are sauted nicely, add cooked dal and mix well along with salt
  5. Add ½ Cup of water and allow it to boil for another 5 minutes
  6. The yummy Vengaya Kootu (Onion Dal Stew) is ready to serve with hot rotis/ rice
