Vengaya kootu is very simple to make and it is a great side dish for rice as well as Chapati. The main ingredient is pepper-cumin seeds.

Ingredients:
| Moong Dal | ½ Cup |
| Onion | 3 |
| Turmeric | a Pinch |
| Salt | To Taste |
| Pepper | 1 teaspoon |
| Cumin Seeds | 1 teaspoon |
Ingredients For Seasoning:
| Mustard Seeds | 1 teaspoon |
| Oil | 2 teaspoon |
Method:
- Wash and pressure cook the dal and allow for 2 whistles. The dal should not be smashed but should be cooked completely
- Grind the pepper and cumin to a coarse powder. Finely chop the onions and keep it aside
- Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds. When the mustard seeds starts to sputter, add chopped onions and saute well in a medium flame for about 10 minutes. Add a pinch of salt to bring out the moisture from the onion and to cook them evenly. Add pepper-cumin coarse powder and mix well
- After the onions are sauted nicely, add cooked dal and mix well along with salt
- Add ½ Cup of water and allow it to boil for another 5 minutes
- The yummy Vengaya Kootu (Onion Dal Stew) is ready to serve with hot rotis/ rice
