Green Gram Sweet Sundal is a sundal that we prepare for Navarathri. In Navarathri we make Sundal every day for Prasad and invite friends and relatives to see our Golu, offer them Haldi, Kumkum , Thamboolan along with the Sundal and other Prasad. We can make both Savory or sweet version of Sundal varieties. Conventionally we make Savory sundal most of the times for Prasad. For few days in Navarathri we can also make Sweet Sundal for a difference. We can make Sweet Sundal with Green Moong, Cow peas, Bengal Gram. We can also mix all these 3 dal and make Mixed Sweet Sundal. This recipe explains how to make Green Gram Sweet Sundal (Pacha Payiru Vella Sundal).

Sundal made using Green bean or Green Moong is so healthy and also nutritious. It has an excellent source of variable nutrients and protein. Along with this Green moong, we are going to use jaggery which is another ingredient that is rich in Iron. Combining these 2 nutritious ingredients, makes this Sundal very healthy and also tasty.

Ingredients

  • ¼ Cup Green Gram (Pachai Payiru)
  • ½ Cup Grated Jaggery
  • a Pinch Cardamom Powder
  • 1 tablespoon Grated Coconut

Instructions

Soaking Green Gram

  • Wash and soak Green Gram for 3 hours.

Pressure cooking Process

  • After 3 hours, drain water from soaked green gram. Add fresh water just till the level of the green gram and pressure cook for 2 whistles. We need cooked Green gram but not mushy.

Melting Jaggery

  • Take Jaggery in a sauce pan. Add ¼ Cup of water and allow the jaggery to melt completely

Making Green Gram Sweet Sundal

  • Strain the melted jaggery to a heavy bottomed pan. Bring the jaggery juice to boil
  • Add cardamom powder and grated coconut to the jaggery juice
  • Now, add the cooked Green gram and give a nice mix
  • Keep the sundal in low flame till all the jaggery juice is absorbed by the dal. If you like you can add a teaspoon of ghee for enhanced flavor. Once all the jaggery juice is incorporated with the cooked dal, swtich off the flame

Serving Time

  • The healthy and scrumptious Green Gram Sweet Sundal is now ready!

Notes

  1. Soaking Green gram helps to cook the dal easily. If we forgot to soak, we can dry roast the dal till its light brown and then pressure cook for about 3 whistles. We can even cook the soaked dal in an open pan but that will be time consuming
  2. At first the sundal looks soggy but if we keep cooking in low flame, the jaggery juice will be absorbed and the sundal will not be sticky.
