Tadka Dal Recipe | Dal Tadka Recipe

Tadka Dal is one of the simplest dal variety and it is one of the usual dal dish in most of Punjabi homes. Tadka means "tempering" and in Dal Tadka (Tadka Dal) is a very simple and easy dish where we are going to cook everything with dal and finally add the tempering just before serving.  We can serve this delicious Dal Tadka with roti / chapati or any Indian Bread and also just with plain steaming rice.

Ingredients:
Red Lentils / Moong Dal 1 Cup*
Onion 1 
Tomato 1
Green Chilli 1
Chopped Ginger 1 teaspoon
Chopped Garlic 1 teaspoon
Turmeric Powder ¼ teaspoon
Red Chilli Powder ¼ teaspoon
Coriander Powder 2 teaspoon
Salt To Taste
Chopped Coriander Leaves 1 tablespoon

* 1 cup = 250 ml.

For Seasoning:

Ghee / Butter 1 teaspoon
Cumin Seeds 1 teaspoon
Red Chilli 3
Curry Leaves Few

Method:

  1. Rinse and soak the moong dal in water for about half an hour. Meanwhile, Finely chop the onions and tomatoes and keep it ready
  2. After half an hour, Drain the water from moong dal and add the finely chopped onions, tomatoes, garlic, green chillies and ginger along with salt and turmeric powder. Add 4 cups of water and pressure cook the dal allowing atleast 3-4 whistles so that the dal is cooked nicely and gets mashed
  3. Allow the steam to release from the cooker on its own and then take the cooked dal and Using a hand blender or butter churner, blend the cooked dal along with the cooked onions and tomatoes so that the dal is smooth. Keep the blended dal in the flame and add coriander powder and red chilli powder and mix well. Bring the dal to boil and remove from flame. Now our dal is ready.
  4. In another pan, add butter and add cumin seeds. When the cumin seeds starts to sputter, add broken red chilli  and curry leaves and mix well. Add the tadka to the dal just before serving.
  5. The delicious Dal Tadka is now ready to serve with hot steaming rice or roti.
