Servings | 4 |
Preparation Time | 5 mins |
Cooking Time | 20 mins |
Ingredients:
Tomatillio (Green unripen tomatoes) | 8-10 |
Moongdal | 4 tablespoon |
Coriander Leaves | 1/4 Cup chopped |
Turmeric | 1/2 teaspoon |
Salt | to taste |
Oil | 1 tablespoon |
Ingredients for Grinding:
Grated Coconut | 1/4 Cup |
Green Chillies | 3 |
Ingredients for Seasoning:
Ghee | 1 teaspoon |
Mustard seeds | 1 teaspoon |
Split Urid dal | 1 teaspoon |
Cumin Seeds | 1 teaspoon |
Curry leaves | Few |
Hing | a Pinch |
Method:
- Pressure cook the moong dal and mash it nicely and keep it aside
- Wash the Tomatilloes and cut into medium sized cubes as shown in the picture below
- Add grated coconut and green chillies in the mixer
- Grind the coconut and green chillies to a nice paste and keep this ready
- Heat oil in a pan and add chopped tomatilloes and add 1/4 teaspoon of salt and mix well and saute them for atleast 5 minutes in medium flame
- Now add mashed dal, ground paste and salt and mix well.
- Remove the tomatillo stew from flame and add 3/4 cup of water and pressure cook it . Allow for atleast 2 whistles as tomatillo are hard and need more time to cook. It is better to pressure cook them as it will take more time to cook in pan
- Meanwhile, heat another pan and add ghee and when the ghee is hot, add mustard seeds. When the mustard seeds starts to sputter, add cumin seeds, split urid dal and saute it till the dal turns golden brown color. Finally add hing and curry leaves and remove from flame
- After the pressure is released from the cooker completely, take the cooked tomatillo stew and check if the tomatilloes are cooked completely
- Add the seasoned ingredients to the stew and mix well
- Serve the yummy Thakalikkai Kootu (Tomatillo Stew) with rice or chapati

This recipe seems to have been posted several years ago. But I would like to highlight that tomatillos are not unripe green tomatoes! Tomatillo is a completely different vegetable with a papery cover on it which is to be discarded. I do enjoy many of your recipes in You Tube. Thanks!
Pachai thakkali is unripe tomatoes. Tomatillos are a totally different plant and like tomatoes do belong to the nightshade family. Tomatillos have a slimy feel when cooked. Please correct and change your title too.
Sure will do. Thanks
