Thakalikkai Kootu (Tomatillo Stew)

Last Updated On: Dec 28, 2017 by Sowmya Venkatachalam

I recently got a request from one of my fan asking recipe using green tomatoes. Immediately thought of doing simple thakalikkai kootu which is a very delicious recipe which is a perfect sidedish for rice. I personally like to have this yummy kootu with chapati.

Servings 4
Preparation Time 5 mins
Cooking Time 20 mins
Ingredients:
Tomatillio (Green unripen tomatoes) 8-10
Moongdal 4 tablespoon
Coriander Leaves ¼ Cup chopped
Turmeric ½ teaspoon
Salt to taste
Oil 1 tablespoon

Ingredients for Grinding:

Grated Coconut ¼ Cup
Green Chillies 3

Ingredients for Seasoning:

Ghee 1 teaspoon
Mustard seeds 1 teaspoon
Split Urid dal 1 teaspoon
Cumin Seeds 1 teaspoon
Curry leaves Few
Hing a Pinch
Method:
  1. Pressure cook the moong dal and mash it nicely and keep it aside
  2. Wash the Tomatilloes  and cut into medium sized cubes as shown in the picture below
  3. Add grated coconut and green chillies in the mixer
  4. Grind the coconut and green chillies to a nice paste and keep this ready
  5. Heat oil in a pan and add chopped tomatilloes and add ¼ teaspoon of salt and mix well and saute them for atleast 5 minutes in medium flame
  6. Now add mashed dal, ground paste and salt and mix well.
  7. Remove the tomatillo stew from flame and add ¾ cup of water and pressure cook it . Allow for atleast 2 whistles as tomatillo are hard and need more time to cook. It is better to pressure cook them as it will take more time to cook in pan
  8. Meanwhile, heat another pan and add ghee and when the ghee is hot, add mustard seeds. When the mustard seeds starts to sputter, add cumin seeds, split urid dal and saute it till the dal turns golden brown color. Finally add hing and curry leaves and remove from flame
  9. After the pressure is released from the cooker completely, take the cooked tomatillo stew and check if the tomatilloes are cooked completely
  10. Add the seasoned ingredients to the stew and mix well
  11. Serve the yummy Thakalikkai Kootu (Tomatillo Stew) with rice or chapati
