Vazhakkai Poriyal (Raw Banana (Plantain) Curry) is a very quick and easy to make poriyal.  In this recipe cooked Vazhakkai is seasoned with spices and coconut with very less oil. Raw Banana and Potato are two commonly made poriyal in most our SouthIndian kitchen, especially in Tamilnadu. We can make lot of different recipes with Raw Banana. Most of like Roasting raw banana with lots of spices and make it like Vazhakkai Varuval. Varuval tastes awesome with most of the main courses like Rasam, Kuzhambu, rice varieties like Tamarind rice, Lemon rice or just with plain Curd Rice too. But Varuval needs more oil than this simple Vazhakkai Poriyal.

Different variations of making Vazhakkai Poriyal

  • We usually don’t add  ‘onion – garlic’ in this recipe. But if you like onion/garlic, then you can add it.
  • Adding green chilies and ginger brings additional flavor.
  • You can simply skip the grinding process and just add the coconut at the end and mix well
