Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

Sesame seeds kozhukattai (ellu kozhukattai) is a delicious recipe and specially made on the auspicious day of Vinayaka Chaturti(Ganesh Chaturti). This is another traditional dish we do for neivedhyam for Lord Ganesha along with Thengai Purna kozhukattai and Ulundhu kozhukattai. This is so simple to make and tastes yummy. Especially black Sesame Seeds are particularly rich in iron, so they’re highly recommended for those with anemia and weakness. So even if you are not doing this dish for neivedhyam, we can make this filling alone and have it if we have anemia or weakness. Black sesame seeds combined with jaggery is a tasty and iron rich filling.

We can also use white or brown variety of Sesame seeds. I have given both the videos below. One video is with Black Sesame Seeds and its detailed video with voice over and other with quicker video and using white sesame seeds. Sesame seeds, on grinding releases oil which will be used to bind with jaggery. Sesame seeds are first soaked for 10 mins and then strained and dry fried till it turns golden brown and then grind it along with jaggery, coconut and cardamom seeds to get a thick mixture. The filling is then stuffed inside the modak and steam cooked!

Tips for making Green Gram Kozhukattai | Pachhai Payiru Kozhukattai:

  1. We can use white or black sesame seeds. Generally we don't use black sesame seeds for festivals.
  2. There is not jaggery consistency for jaggery. We just need to concoct Sesame paste with jaggery till it becomes thick.
  3. Filing and outercover are already cooked so steam cook the kozhukattai for just 3 mins. Overcooking makes the kozhukattai very hard. undercooking makes it sticky. So cook for 3mins and then allow it to cool off so its not sticky.

You may also want to try:

  • Kozhukattai maavu outer cover is the most integral part in getting soft and tasty kozhukattai. Raw rice is soaked, grind to batter and the batter is cooked to soft non-sticky dough. Filling is then prepared and stuffed inside the rice dough cups.
  • Thengai Purana Kozhukattai also called Modhagam or Modak is a very popular and traditional Kozhukattai variety that we make for many festivals like Ganesha Chaturti, Varalakshmi Vratham, Aadi Velli, Shankatahara Chaturti and many more occasions.
  • Pidi Kozhukattai is a very mild sweet variety that is made with rice flour and jaggery. A very easy to make Kozhukattai variety.
