Mezhukkupuratti, a typical Kerala Style Stir-Fry made with vegetables like Raw Banana, Potato, Yam or any other vegetables. Usually this delicious dish is also part of Onam Sadya. Raw Banana is cooked in Sautéed onions along with spice powders and cooked in low flame till soft. Instead of adding spice powders, we can grind onion-red chili- garlic without adding water and add it as a spice for Raw banana. This is very flavorful Stir-Fry which goes very well with Pulissery, Sambar or any Rasam Varieties.

Tips for making Vazhakkai Mezhukkupuratti :

  1. Chop the raw banana into small cubes that helps to cook it faster
  2. Always soak the chopped raw banana in water to prevent it from de-coloring. Also adding salt makes the raw banana pieces to absorbs the salt
  3. While frying onions and spice powders, keep the flame low to prevent the spice powders from getting burnt
  4. Cook the raw banana in a closed pan in low flame. Stir occasionally to prevent the raw banana getting stuck to the bottom of the pan
  5. Once cooked, sprinkle salt and stir-fry for a minute.
  6. Serve the Mezhukkupuratti with Pulissery, Sambar or Rasam

Mezhukkupuratti is one of the typical Kerala Stir-Fry made with vegetables like Raw Banana, Yam, Potato or any other vegetables. This Stir-Fry is a very delicious and easy to make side dish for any South Indian Main Courses.

Ingredients

  • 3 nos Raw Banana medium size, chopped small cubes
  • 1 no Onion Finely Chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Red Chili Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Coriander Powder
  • ¼ teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Adjust As needed

For Tempering

  • 2 tablespoon Oil preferably coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1 no Green Chili Slit
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves

Instructions 

Preparing Raw Banana

  • Peel the Raw Banana, chop into small cubes. Add Water to the chopped Raw Banana along with a teaspoon of salt. Let the veggie set aside for 10 mins. Raw Banan will absorb salt from the water and also avoid the decolorization of the vegetable.

Cooking Mezhukkupuratti

  • Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and allow it to sputter. Then add curry leaves, slit green chili and fry for few seconds
  • Now, add the chopped onions along with pinch of salt and saute the onions in low flame till they are light brown
  • To the sauteed onions, add red chili powder, turmeric powder and coriander powder and stir-fry for a minute
  • Then, drain water from the chopped raw banana and add it to the pan. Add salt and mix well so that the raw banana gets nicely combined with the spice powders.
  • Cover & cook in low flame till the raw banan is soft. Open the lid and stir occasionally to prevent raw banana getting burnt or sticking to the bottom of the pan. Only if required sprinkle some water.
  • Once the Raw Banana is fully cooked, switch off the flame.

Serving Time

  • Delicious Vazhakkai (Raw Banana) Mezhukkupuratti is now ready! Relish with Sambar/Rasam/Mor Kuzhambu or any Rice Varieties!

Notes

Instead of adding red chili powder, we can grind shallots(baby onions), garlic and red chili without adding water and add it to the mezhukkupuratti
