The grand Tamil festival of Pongal begins with Bogi. The Bogi Festival is celebrated on the last day of the Tamil month Margazhi. Traditionally, it is dedicated to Lord Indra, revered as the "God of Rain," to express gratitude for providing sufficient rainfall for a bountiful harvest.
On this day, people clean their homes thoroughly and discard old, unused items, symbolizing the Tamil saying "Pazhayana Kazhithalum Pudhiyana Pugudhalum" (Out with the old, in with the new). In villages, discarded items are often collected and burned in a bonfire at the center of the community.
Homes are freshly painted, adorned with kolams (decorative patterns), and these kolams are often enhanced with vibrant colors. Families take an oil bath, a traditional cleansing ritual, and prepare special dishes such as poli, vadai, and payasamto offer as neivedhyam to the deities, particularly Lord Indra.
Let us celebrate Bogi with joy and gratitude while being mindful of the environment. Wishing you all a Happy Bogi!
