Karuveppilai Podi, a traditional podi variety most of us make and store it like Paruppu Podi. Curry leaves are dried, dry roasted with dals and chili and peppercorns and grind it to a smooth powder. Generally in most of our grand parents house, we can see kariveppilai podi, paruppu podi, veppilai katti, thengai milagai podi and angaya podi. All these podi and pickles have longer shelf life and they are ready to use anytime.  They are generally served as an accompaniment or as a mix for rice.

What are Curry Leaves?

Curry leaves, or kadi patta, are aromatic herbs used for medicinal and culinary purposes. Curry Leaves are an integral ingredient in Indian Kitchen. We use curry leaves as a natural flavoring agent with a number of important health benefits. They not only give your food a pleasant aroma but can enhance its flavor and health benefits. Most people think that curry leaves are only added for flavor and throw the leaves away but they have more nutritional value and benefits.

The health benefits of curry leaves also include weight loss, treating various gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea, managing diabetes, improving eyesight, and relieving stress. Curry leaves contain various antioxidant properties that help maintain optimum cholesterol balance.

Curry Leaves Powder (Karuveppilai Podi) is a spicy, healthy and delicious podi variety. We can store this podi like dal powder and mix with hot steaming rice along with a teaspoon of sesame oil or ghee and relish this wonderful podi

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups Curry leaves Tightly Packed. 1 Cup - 250ml
  • 4 Red Chili
  • 3 tablespoon Urad Dal
  • 1 tablespoon Split Bengal Gram (Channa Dal / Kadalaparuppu)
  • ½ teaspoon Peppercorns
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Adjust As Needed
  • ½ teaspoon Asafoetida (Asafetida / Hing)
  • ½ teaspoon Tamarind Paste or 1 tamarind see Size dry tamarind

Instructions 

Preparing Curry Leaves

  • Wash the curry leaves thoroughly. Spread the washed curry leaves in a clean towel and keep it in shady place and allow it to dry completely. 

Preparing Grinding Ingredients

  • Dry roast the Dals, red chillies, peppercorns, cumin seeds and tamarind and fry till the Dals becomes golden brown color. Take this aside
  • Heat a pan, and dry fry the curry leaves till it becomes crispy and take this aside

Grinding Process

  • First grind the dals and spices along with salt to a coarse powder. 
  • Then, add curry leaves and grind everything to a smooth powder

Storing and Serving

  • The mouth-watering curry leaves powder is ready to serve. Store it in air-tight container. You can keep it in refrigerator to maintain the freshness
  • Serve the delicious Kariveppilai Podi (Curryleaves Powder) with hot rice with one spoon of ghee
